Horn Trio Recital at the Malta Arts Festival

Maltese Horn player Etienne Cutajar
The Malta Arts Festival 2009 will be hosting a Horn Trio Recital on Thursday 9th July 2009 at the President’s Palace Courtyard at 21:30CEST. Etienne Cutajar (horn), Thomas Gould (violin) and John Reid (piano) will be joining forces in the performance Horn Trio in E flat Op. 40 (1865) by Johannes Brahms.
This rather unusual chamber combination had triggered the imagination of a number of composers of the 20th century to explore further the potential of the three instruments when brought together on the concert platform as an ensemble. György Ligeti’s Trio for Violin, Horn and Piano (1982) is a late 20th century manifestation of this.
UK-based Maltese Horn player Etienne Cutajar was invited by the Malta Arts Festival to perform both works together with pianist John Reid and violinist Thomas Gould, who will also perform Ralph Vaughan Williams’ popular Lark Ascending for violin and piano.
The programme of this year’s Malta Arts Festival aims at highlighting our identity within a wider Mediterranean and European context as well as promoting diversity in order to ensure development of the arts scene.
All fifteen exciting events are being presented at very low ticket prices ranging between €10 and 15, in line with the MCCA’s mission to make the Arts accessible to as large an audience as possible. The festival runs between the 1st and 24th July.
The Festival is supported by HSBC, Valletta Local Council, Malta Post and Hotel Phoenicia, and functions within the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport.
Mario Frendo is the Artistic Director of the Malta Arts Festival.
