This year’s fund-raising activity of L-Istrina will be organized by the Malta Community Chest Fund following an agreement with the Public Broadcasting Services (PBS), President George Abela said on Saturday during a press conference.

A major difference in this year’s event will be that no prizes will be given out to people who call in to donate.

President Abela said that after all these years of prize-giving, this will be challenge but that “the value of our society is that one does not need to win to help those in need”.

Dr Abela said that no prizes will be accepted except for white goods such as cookers, fridges and washing machines which will be distributed throughout the year to the needy.

Dr Abela said that as usual, philanthropic organizations will be able to apply for assistance from the funds raised during the event by putting forward their requests. Two PBS representatives will be on the MCCF board.

Besides giving free airtime, PBS will be offering advertising time to aid the event.

The event will be held on the 26th December and will be broadcast from Lufthansa Technik which has offered its facilities for free.
