The courts have decided to reject an application by a number of karozzini owners to keep their karozzini stand in St George Square in Valletta opposite the President’s Palace.

The Malta Transport Authority (ADT) wanted the karozzini owners to relocate to a new site because of the square is being embellished and pedestrianised. This meant that there would not be place for the karozzini any more in the square.

The karozzini owners were worried that the stand’s relocation would severely affect their job and that they would be banned from Valletta’s central areas.

However, the court noted that it was the ADT that was the legal authority to decide where to place the karozzini stands. The authority was also entitled to decide whether to restrict access to karozzini or not.

Just because the karozzini owners had been established at the Palace square for a number of years did not mean they had a legal right to a stand there.
