Between 28th September and 3rd October 2009, the Cittadella Centre for Culture and Arts in Gozo will be hosting the first participants of the “Gozo – The Artists’ Island Project”, a new initiative of the Gozo Council for Culture & Arts within the Ministry for Gozo.
This project seeks to attract foreign artists of various genres (musicians, singers, actors, painters, sculptors, writers and others) to come and spend some time in Gozo, offer their expertise to local related artists and involve the population at large through the organisation of concerts, soirees, exhibitions and other related activities. The first of such groups of artists is the Seraphim Consort made up of thirty five German musicians, specialising in playing on Renaissance period instruments.
For more than ten years, Elisabeth Schwanda has been conducting master classes of music of the Renaissance. The repertoire consists of dance music, fantasies and canzonas of the 16th and 17th century and sacred music (motets and masses) of the same era, while the musicians play on period instruments, such as recorders in six different sizes, viola da gambas, cornettos and trombones; it includes works by German, English, French and Italian composers like John Dowland, Henry Purcell, John Bull, Pierre Phalese, William Brade, Orlando di Lasso, Giovanni Gabrieli, Johnann Hermann Schein, Michael Altenburg, Andreas Hammerschmidt, Michael Praetorius and others.
The members of this renaissance music group are advanced amateurs who became experts on their instruments after many years of practice. Through Elisabeth Schwanda’s mentoring, a professional quality is guaranteed.
During the final concerts, Elisabeth Schwanda will explain both the instruments and the pieces of the programme. An audience which is unfamiliar with the repertoire of the Renaissance era will be brought in touch with it in an entertaining and informative way.
The Cittadella Centre for Culture & Arts in Gozo, with its historic ambience is an exquisite venue for this music genre. Musicians and the audience will doubtlessly be inspired by the authentic combination of music, architecture and history.
The concerts “Golden Age of the Renaissance” will be held on Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd October 2009 at 20.00 at the Cittadella Centre for Culture & Arts. The general public is invited to attend free of charge. A €5 donation at the door towards the Rotary Club – Gozo Charity Fund will entitle patrons to a glass of wine at the end of the concert. Pre-booking is recommended on info-line: 21556125 during office hours.
