Blogger Robert Micallef won the e-journalism award of the Malta Journalism Awards sponsored by SmartCity Malta with his three entries published on MaltaMedia .com.  This Robert’s second win of this award and it is the fourth time in six years that MaltaMedia News has won the e-journalism category of the awards since its introduction in 2002.

For the 18th consecutive year, the Institute of Maltese Journalists (IGM) organised the Malta Journalism Awards, which is Malta’s annual journalistic competition.

Mr Micallef’s three entries tackled “Christopher Hitchens on Malta”, the “Malta-Corfu connection”, and “Desmond Morris in Malta”.

Claudio Grech, CEO of SmartCity Malta, presenting the e-journalism award to MaltaMedia.com blogger Robert MicallefClaudio Grech, the Chief Executive Officer of SmartCity Malta, the self-sustained township for knowledge-based companies being developed by SmartCity in partnership with the Government of Malta, presented the category trophy to Robert Micallef during the presentation ceremony held at Robert Samut Hall in Floriana. Apart from the category trophy, designed by Maltese artist Alfred Mizzi, Micallef received €350 in prize money.

Paul Cachia and Carmelina Grech, both from www.di-ve.com, were the other two finalists in this year’s e-journalism category.

The e-journalism category in the Malta Journalism Awards rewards those e-journalists in Malta who strive harder to deliver correct information to an ever increasing number of viewers.  This is the second consecutive edition that SmartCity Malta is sponsoring the e-journalism category.

For the Institute of Maltese Journalists, the e-journalism award recognises the particularly important role of Maltese news-based websites. These have become an important and essential source of information for Maltese citizens, whether they are living in Malta, permanently residing in another country, or temporarily abroad.

Claudio Grech said “We congratulate Robert Micallef on winning this year’s edition of the e-journalism award.  We believe that ICTs have opened up an entirely new dynamic channel through which news content can be delivered instantaneously as it happens. SmartCity recognises the value of this medium and is currently striving to attract new media operators to set up their activities in SmartCity Malta. Our sponsorship of the e-journalism award forms part of SmartCity Malta’s commitment to encourage and contribute towards the home-grown development of this sector.”

The Editor and all the staff at the MaltaMedia Online Network congratulate Robert for the prestigious achievement.
