Cirkewwa ferry terminal to be completed by 2012
Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt has said that upgrading works at the ÄŠirkewwa ferry terminal are expected to be completed by 2012. The minister was replying to a parliamentary question by Gozitan Labour MP Anton Refalo. Dr Gatt said that the project will be divided into two phases.
The first phase will involve the construction of temporary facilities so as to keep the terminal operational while vacating the site where major works are meant to be carried out. He added that the tendering process for these works has already begun and is expected to be concluded by April 2010.
The second phase will include the construction of a new passenger terminal, gangways, access roads, bicycle lanes, parking areas and facilities to shelter passengers in the south quay, as well as the completion of berth 3 in the north quay, repair works at the RoRo ramp and minor refurbishment works.
The tendering process for the second phase is expected to commence by the end of the year. Dr Gatt said that resurfacing works and a new terminal design have already been carried out this year.
