Golfers Julia Klotz and Kerstin Schwinghammer walked away with a return ticket for two persons to Cyprus each, courtesy of Emirates. The airline sponsored the 3rd Malta Golf Association Shield, hosted at the Royal Malta Golf Club in Marsa.
One hundred Men, 31 Ladies, and 5 Juniors signed up for the competition based on a two day aggregate medal (handicapped). The Ladies played their first day on Thursday 22nd and the Men on Saturday 24th October. The final second day round was held on Sunday 25th October 2009.
The Ladies made full use of the good weather as well as of their additional two shot allowance courtesy of the course rating and set the pace for the competition with Julia Klotz carding a net 61, followed by Kerstin Schwinghammer with a net 65.
The Men’s first day play was characterised by a near gale force wind that resulted in high scores pushing the cut to 79 strokes at the end of play. The least deterred were Charles Robson who carded a net 66, followed by Sean Bradshaw and Patrick Brown both on a net 67. All five Junior boys, namely Chris Bergedahl, Danny Holland, Luca Caruana, Quint Van Beek and Bernard Abele, managed to make the cut.
The second 18 holes for the tournament were played in calmer weather conditions. David Urpani, Lew Collins and young Luca handed in the best net scores (65) for the day whilst Joanne Cassar and Kerstin Schwinghammer had the best scores for the Ladies with a net 67.
The first day leader, Jutta Klotz, registered a net 69 on the second day for an aggregate score 130. Klotz placed two shots ahead of Schwinghammer and 4 shots ahead of third placed Patrick Brown.
Paul Fleri Soler, Emirates’ Manager Malta and Cyprus, in the presence of Guy Chamberlian, RMGC Captain and Eileen O’Brien, Lady Captain, presented the winners with their prizes.
