Malta ranked top for e-government in the EU
Malta is at the forefront in the provision of e-government services among the European Union members states, being a leader in the availability and sophistication of the services.
This emerges from the 8th benchmarking report commissioned by the European Commission and published Thursday on the occasion of the ministerial e-government conference in Malmo, Sweden.  The report was compiled by a group of private consulting companies led by Capgemini.
According to the report, the leading six nations on the full online availability of the basic 20 services are Austria, Malta, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Sweden and Slovenia with the top 4 having the same score.
With regard to the online sophistication of the 20 basic services, the leading six nations are Malta, Portugal, Sweden, Austria, Slovenia and Estonia.
Malta also scores top in the indicators for user experience, followed by Finland and UK.
Malta, together with Estonia, Ireland, and Luxembourg features as a top performer for the availability benchmarks.
Malta is 7th in the use of e-procurement.
Compared to the last report published two years ago, progress was registered in the EU in the use of e-government. Full onLine availability is 71% (59%: ‘07) and sophistication 83% (76%: ’07). Malta is well above these two averages.
The report says some countries show leapfrog results; some continued high performance. Personalised services are gaining ground and becoming more commonplace across Europe. User empowering technologies are pushing governments to redesign their eGovernment services.
