The European Network Against Racism (ENAR) has reported that racism and religious discrimination increased in Malta in 2008 due to the increase in illegal immigration. Such racism and discrimination is directed towards these same illegal immigrants, the organisations that help them and Muslim people.

Various immigrants also complain that they find it hard to find work in Malta and have to settle for undeclared jobs doing dangerous work and without gaining any rights whatsoever.
