Video: St George’s Square given a new lease of life
St George’s Square in Valletta has been given a new lease of life following a 6-month rehabilitation project which has turned the square into a pedestrian open air site. Formerly a car park used mainly by Members of Parliament, the square was formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi on Sunday evening.
The Prime Minister said that the aim of rehabilitation of the square was to enhance the status of the Palace which overlooks it, and that the government aimed to transform the Palace into the city’s cultural centre. He added that the Renzo Piano City Gate project, which would see Parliament moving out of the Palace, also served to fulfil this aim.
“From St George’s Square we will continue to develop our national identity. We will continue to develop and we will continue to grow,” Dr Gonzi concluded.
