Video: President to remain in hospital overnight
The President of the Republic George Abela was taken to hospital Friday morning after fainting during the funeral of entrepreneur Angelo Fenech at the St George parish church in Qormi, the President’s home town.
In a statement, Martin Bugelli, Director General for Information, Local Government and Public Consultation, said that the President was taken slightly sick when he was momentarily overcome by emotion.
President Abela, who is 61 years old and jogs regularly to keep fit, is at Mater Dei hospital where he has recovered, although he will remain in hospital overnight for observation.
Results of tests done on the president, including that of H1N1 (swine flu) have all proved negative. It appears that what happened was that his blood pressure dropped due to exhaustion. The funeral atmosphere did not help either.
He may have to miss this weekend’s launch of the major fundraising event l-Istrina over which he presides.
