Interviewed by The Sunday Times, Police Commissioner John Rizzo has spoken openly about a near-death experience he went through and the five months he had to spend in hospital earlier this year.

In a wide-ranging interview in The Sunday Times, the police commissioner describes how he had planned to take two weeks off in June to eliminate ulcerative colitis – an inflammatory bowel disease – but was unable to return to work until 1st November.

In the interview he said: “I remember looking at my wife’s face and telling her to kiss the children goodbye for me. Those were the last words I remember. Then, I spent a frightening hour literally battling to survive.”

“You feel like you’re drowning, unable to breathe. Sometimes you manage to surface and gasp for air,  but instead of getting relief you feel as if your lungs are going to explode. It’s an inexplicable feeling. You’re going in and out of consiousness, hearing voices of nurses and doctors in the distance.”
