A 44-year-old Italian fisherman, Francesco Giancalone was fined €35,000 after he pleaded guilty to fishing illegally in Maltese waters on board the Italian fishing vessel Mamma Maria.

The Italian fishing trawler has been caught fishing illegally by the Armed Forces of Malta from their Islander aircraft some 16 nautical miles to the southeast of Malta on Monday.

Meanwhile, 33-year-old Jimmy Buhagiar from Fgura pleaded guilty to having assaulted his wife on Monday evening. He was sentenced to a two-year prison term suspended for four years. The court also ordered the man not to approach his wife.

In another case, a local warden, 25-year-old Carlo Micallef and the two men, 48-year-old Tarcisio Bongailas and his 23-year-old son Justin Bongailas, were charged with fighting amongst themselves.

The Bongailas father and son, who were in a truck that was stopped by the warden for being overloaded with fruit and vegetables, ended up in a fight with the warden.

The warden was also charged with committing an offence he was duty bound to prevent. All three men pleaded not guilty and were released on bail against a personal guarantee of €500 each.
