On Wednesday evening, Foreign Minister Tonio Borg met with Libyan Prime Minister Mahmoudi al Baghdadi during which the current visas impasse was discussed.

Foreign Minister Tonio Borg was informed by the Libyan Prime Minister that proposals put forward by the Spanish EU Presidency have been accepted by the Libyan government. However, they still have to be accepted by the Swiss government.

The Libyan Prime Minister also expressed his appreciation for the assistance given by Malta in this issue. Dr Borg added that he will be raising the issue at the next EU Council of Foreign Ministers on 22nd March if no solution is found till that then.

Various Mediterranean Schengen countries are also prepared to put forward proposals and solutions so that the Schengen system is not used for as a political football.

On Thursday, Dr Borg also met the Libyan Minister for European Affairs, Abdulati Alobidi, besides having various phone conversations with the Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Moratinos and Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini, who will be visiting Libay on 15th March.
