Over 300,000 vehicles on the road
The National Statistics Office has reported that the stock of licensed motor vehicles stood at 300,308 at the end of the first quarter of 2010.
As at the end of March, the stock of licensed motor vehicles as provided by Transport Malta stood at 300,308. Of these, 76.4 per cent were private vehicles, while commercial vehicles accounted for 15.8 per cent.
New licences issued during the first quarter of 2010 amounted to 3,786. Private vehicles accounted for 2,992 new licences, or 79.0 per cent of the total. In the reference period, the majority of new licences were issued to private vehicles falling within ‘Class 1′ (<1300 cc), accounting for 1,360 new licences, followed by vehicles in ‘Class 5′ (1801-2000 cc) with 501.
‘Newly-licenced’ motor vehicles amounted to 1,280, or 33.8 per cent of the total. A total of 2,506 ‘used’ motor vehicles were newly licensed during the quarter under review.
