Video: Maltese population down by 1.6%
Eurostat confirmed that in 2009 the Maltese population decreased by 1.6%, from the initial 414, 000 to 413, 000 persons.The decrease was not only observed in Malta but also another seven EU countries, the highest decrease being that of 6.2% in Lithuania. As opposed to this decrease the population increased in 17 EU member states, the highest being in Luxemburg with a staggering increase of 17.2%.
The Birth rate in Malta remained stable at 10%; the highest birth rate was reached in Ireland whereas the lowest was reached in Germany. A total of 5 million births were recorded in 2009. The death rate in Malta decreased slightly to a 7.8%, the highest increase in deaths was noted in Bulgaria whereas it highly decreased in Ireland.
The migration influx which also influences the population decreased by 3.3% in Malta, the highest influx was noted in Luxemburg whereas the least was noted in Ireland.
Globally the population in the 27 EU member state increased by 2.7%.
