Malta to get €4.5m under EEA and Norwegian Financial Mechanisms
After intensive negotiations in Brussels, Malta has been allocated €4.5 million under the European Economic Area (EEA) and Norwegian Financial Mechanisms for the period 2009-2014.
The aim of these Financial Mechanisms is to finance projects related to the themes of environmental protection and management, climate change and renewable energy, civil society, human and social development and the protection of cultural heritage.
It should be noted that the allocated amount of €4.5 million is an increase of 24% on the amount of €3.621 million that was received by Malta for the period 2004-2009.
A number of projects were financed during the previous period, including the conservation of Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, the implementation of the Schengen Acquis at the Malta International Airport, and the Master Plan for the Cittadella in Gozo.
Ambassador Richard Cachia Caruana, Permanent Representative of Malta to the European Union, welcomed the decision and said that this represents the latest achievement in the Government’s efforts to secure further funds which will continue to be used in projects which will make a real difference in the quality of life of the Maltese and Gozitan people.
