2010 was declared the European year for poverty and social exclusion, Malta ranks 12th as the countries in the European Union (EU) with the highest population in the risk of poverty.

In the EU approximately 16 per cent of the population lives in poverty or is in the risk of poverty.  In Malta 15 per cent live in the risk of poverty, Favourite Channel news reports.

Rafeal Scerri in a presentation at Sannat Gozo, said that long term unemployment is the main factor leading to such poverty.
