The Friends of the London Oratory, together with the Associazione Arca Petrina Onlus, Rome have organised an exhibition titled ‘The Papal Corpus Christi Procession in the Reign of Pope Gregory XVI – through the Illustrations of Salvatore Busuttil (1837-1839)’.

This exhibition was held at St Wilfrid’s Hall, Brompton Oratory, South Kensington from 19-24 September 2010. The exhibits were provided courtesy of Fondazione Marco Besso – Rome, with the expert consultation of Antonio Martini, Author and Historian of Papal Rome; Roberto Concorsi, Event Coordinator and Expert in Roman Church Dress and Carla Rivolta, Architect, Art Designer and Exhibition Curator.

A large number of coloured illustrations by Salvatore Busuttil, showing a Papal Corpus Christi procession in the reign of Pope Gregory XVI, were the centre piece of this exhibition. Other exhibits included worship ecclesiastical costumes and liturgical apparatus from the same reign.

Maltese painter Salvatore Busuttil (1798-1854) was the son of the painter Michele Busuttil. He studied at the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca in Rome, where he established himself as an artist. The exhibited illustrations were produced by Salvatore Busuttil during the two year span when accredited to the Vatican.

Malta’s High Commissioner, Joe Zammit Tabona visited the exhibition and was received and shown around by Fr Ronald Creighton-Jobe, Director of the Friends of the London Oratory.
