Outbound tourism on the rise
The National Statistics Office on Tuesday said that the number of outbound trips by residents increases by 18 per cent during January, amounting to 20,518, when compared to the corresponding month last year.
The Outbound trips towards EU destinations accounted for 84 per cent of the total, these advanced by 21 per cent over January 2010, while those towards non-EU destinations increased by 5 per cent.
The two most popular destinations were the UK and Italy, and recorded 8,078 and 4,418 outbound trips respectively.
The NSO added there were drops in the number of trips to Germany and France.
The majority of outbound tourists were males with 12,046, while 43 per cent of tourists were between 25 and 44 years old. The number of same-day visitors remained practically unchanged when compared to 2010 levels, and stood at 1,183.
