Italy stated on Monday that it has now recognised the Benghazi-based Libyan National Council as the only representative of Libya.

Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said the Libyan governement had lost its legitimacy and Muammar Gaddafi and his family had to leave Libya.

An envoy sent by Libya to Greece over the weekend is expected to visit Malta. Malta has not recognised the Benghazi based Libyan national Council.
