On Friday a 19-year-old Liam Camilleri has been charged with attempted murder of his mother’s former partner on Tuesday.

Allegedly Mr Camilleri stabbed and seriously injured 54-year-old Emmanuel Schembri, from Birzebbuga, in Judge William Harding Street at around 20:15hrs on Tuesday.

According to statements given to the police, Mr Schembri and Mr Camilleri and Liam Camilleris’s mother had been in a relationship until a few weeks ago, however Ms Camilleri soon starting a relationship with someone else. According to the accused Mr Schembri did not take the news too well, and visited the family’s Pembroke home for an explanation. An argument soon broke out, and Mr Camilleri claimed that the victim was attacking his mother when he hit back, in self-defence.

Ms Camilleri and her 25-year-old son Dean, meanwhile, have admitted to threatening Mr Schembri, to damaging his car and to breaching the public peace. The former was sentenced to a 5-month jail term suspended for 18 months, while the latter was conditionally discharged for 18 months.

Mr Camilleri was remanded in custody by Magistrate Doreen Clarke.
