Cyrus Engerer Sliema’s deputy mayor has resigned from the Nationalist Party on Friday.

Mr. Engerer said, “The Nationalist Party persists in being conservative and my principles are in conflict with it. So I could not remain a member.”

He will however remain serving the Sliema local council as an independent councillor.

Mr. Engerer said that he decided to resign after the Prime Minister’s speech on the divorce debate in parliament on Wednesday. He added that his liberal democratic principles were clashing with the conservative principles of the PN creating a conflict.

Mr Engerer is also expected to join the Labour Party as an active member.
