In the first six months of 2011 a total of 21,548 operations were held at Mater Dei, an increase of 4,440 interventions when compared to the same period in 2007, the last year of St Luke’s Hospital.

The Health Ministry said that an average of 119 operations is being held daily at Mater Dei Hospital; interventions are also being performed on Saturdays and Sundays.

Furthermore the number of operations in the first six months of this year also increased by 927 when compared to the same period in 2010.

The Ministry said that in May 2011 was a record month with 3,762 operations.

It added that several initiatives are being taken for the number of operations to increase reducing the waiting period.

Initiatives include an increase in the number of nurses and professionals working with the health department, an increase in the number of hours during which operating theatres are used and agreements which have been reached with private clinics where cataract operations for which the government will pay will start to be performed.

Health Minister Joseph Cassar thanked all workers in the sector for their contribution.
