Many are those who have passed by the monumental Neo-Gothic building next to Argotti gardens in Floriana and tried to get a glimpse of the impressive interior. Currently known as Robert Sammut Hall, this former Wesleyan Methodist Church was designed by the British architect Thomas Mullet and completed in 1883. It has been fully restored by the Restoration Unit and was used for a number of years for educational and cultural activities.
For the past two years, Robert Sammut hall has been the home of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. The main space which can accomodate the full orchestra during rehearsals, is also a unique space for more intimate concerts with a smaller number of musicians. In fact, the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra is launching a new and exciting series of concerts at this venue dedicated to the works of the Baroque masters, which are extremely well suited to be performed within this space.
The first concert of the MPO Baroque Concert Series to be held on Friday 3rd February, has Michael Laus at the helm playing the harpsichord and directing the MPO musicians who for this particular concert number to an intimate 26. The evening progresses to Johann Sebastian Bach’s eternal Brandenburg concerto no 6 with its unusual and unique orchestration. For the last work, the MPO will be joined by the newly formed Goldberg Ensemble to interpret Vivaldi’s Gloria with sopranos Alison Gatt, Claire Caruana and alto Graziella Debattista as soloists.
