Missing fisherman found alive after two days lost at sea
The Armed Forces of Malta have found the 58-year-old fisherman from Zabbar who was reported missing on Wednesday evening, the man went fishing at around 05:00hrs but failed to return.
The man, Mario Axiaq, was located by an AFM helicopter operated by a joint Italian-Maltese crew on Friday. He was then hoisted onto an Italian Military Mission helicopter at about noon. He was found at around noon 45 nautical miles north east of Malta. He was then rushed to Mater Dei hospital.
When he went missing the man was fishing a few miles out, close to the fish farm at San Tumas.
When the alarm was raised the AFM dispatched a search and rescue launch and a maritime patrol aircraft to the area, they conducted an extensive search at the south east of Malta with negative results. The search recommenced at 6:00hrs CEST on Thursday and involved a helicopter and a fixed wing aircraft but no traces of the man or his 13-foot boat have been detected.
