Senior of the Year Award celebrates solidarity between generations
Francis Xavier Giorgio is the winner of the 19th edition of the Senior of the Year Award
organized by the Secretariat for the Elderly and Community Care. Giorgio is very active in
the field of voluntary work and is a living example of active aging and solidarity between
generations.
Mr. Giorgio works hard for the Sliema youths to have a decent place where t meet. Indeed, he takes care of the environment and the maintenance of Villa Skinas where Catholic Action meetings are held. Besides organisng mass every first week of the month, he also organises social events for youths.
Sr Rose Casapinta is the winner of the Special Award. She worked for twenty years in Sri
Lanka, 10 years in Congo, and 8 years in Tripoli. She always dedicated her energy to the
sick. In Malta Sr Rose worked as a nursing tutor at St Luke’s Hospital. Sr Rose opened the
Nursing Home of the Sisters of the Franciscan Mission of Mary.
The Senior of the Year Award is an opportunity to fight the wrong mentality as regards
Aging and celebrates the values that our elderly have and which serve as a model to
all. This was stated by Parliamentary Secretary for the Elderly and Community
Care thw Hon Mario Galea during his speech at the award giving ceremony of the
Senior of the Year Award
In his speech Mario Galea spoke about members of the elderly community who are an inspiration to the country. Lina Borckdorff got her Masters in her late seventies. Toni Saliba is 74 years old and he contributes as a volunteer with the Civil Protrction. Maria Carmela BusutiLl uses Skype to communicate with her son who resides in the US. Pawlu Saliba turned his farm at Wied iz-Ziju in Zejtun into a laboratory and ogether with Prof Mark Brincat he saved the Maltese cow. Mario Galea said that our elerly have a lot of stories to
narrate. He mentoined the case of Mary Jane Micallef whose father managed to save himself
from drowing in the 1948 Gozitan episode.
The ceremony was held under the patronage of the President of the Republic Dr Gorg Abela
