Polling stations open for 2013 elections
Polling stations have opened for the general election and local councils elections in some localities too. Everything seems to be proceeding smoothly with just a few small queues forming in a few places. Polling stations opened at 07:00 CET and remain open till 22:00 CET. A total of 269 candidates are contesting the 65 parliamentary seats. 6,523 voting documents remained uncollected, almost the same percentage as in 2008. The number of eligible voters today is 326 296, including 29,000 voting for the first time.
PL leader Joseph Muscat voted at Burmarrad school at 09:00 CET while PN leader Lawrewnce Gonzi voted an hour later at Marsascala school. Both leaders were accompanied by their respective wives. President George Abela also voted at Marsascala school at around 11:00 CET. The Electoral Commission has reported that the turnout till 14:00 CET was around 49%, while the final turnout was the same as that of the 2008 elections at 93%.
