The police have reported that an elderly man is in a critical condition after being shot in the face during an attempted robbery on Thursday at Malta International Airport.
Preliminary investigations found that the victim, a 77-year-old living in Qormi, was driving a Renault Megane in the vicinity of the Sky Parks Complex when he was suddenly cornered by a white car. A 68-year-old living in Marsa was travelling in the car.
One of at least two robbers, who were hooded, alighted and tried grabbing hold of a bag containing thousands in cash from the passenger, who, however, defended himself. It was then that at least one shot was fire by the robber who was still in the car before they both fled the scene.
The elderly man who was hit was conveyed to hospital, where he was certified to be in a critical conditional, followed by the other victim some time later. The latter was slightly injured.
The car which was probably used in the attempted armed robbery, a Peugeot 207, was found at about 12.30 p.m., in Triq il-Gudja, Luqa. It was reported stolen on August 7, 2013, in Valletta.
