Prime Minister Joseph Muscat met the President of the State of Israel Shimon Peres on Thursday.
President Peres stated that the relations between both countries are being strengthened, highlighting the countries similarities. President Peres emphasized Israel’s interest in the Mediterranean and Europe.
Talking about the current situation in the Middle East and in the Mediterranean, Prime Minister Muscat said “we are faced with a humanitarian crisis. What happens in Syria, North Africa and Sub Saharan Africa is having a direct effect on Malta and on Europe.” He added that “the wellbeing of Europe depends on the wellbeing of the Mediterranean”.
Referring to Israel as Malta’s extended neighbour, the Prime Minister said “Malta wants to help Israel to strengthen its relationship with Europe.”
The Prime Minister was accompanied by the Maltese delegation including Foreign Affairs Minister George Vella, Tourism Minister Karmenu Vella and Member of Parliament Charles Buhagiar.
