Malta Institute of Management to publish book on Principles of Maltese Tax Law
As part of its continuous contribution towards the development of Managers in Malta and in celebration of the launch of the Malta Variant of the Advanced Diploma in International Taxation, the Malta Institute of Management announced that it is publishing its first book on tax matters.
The need of a book on principles of Maltese tax has been strongly felt in Malta particularly by practitioners in industry and in services. The book will be fundamental also for students sitting for tax papers. The book itself has been prepared for students taking up the Malta Variant of the ADIT but will be extremely useful also for students taking up other Accountancy qualifications. Students had basically no reference books prior to this publication.
The Malta Institute of Management has commissioned Dr Robert Attard to engage in the writing of this book. Dr. Attard is recognised as one of the leading experts in the field of taxation in Malta. The MIM book has so far attracted various positive comments from International and local tax experts. In fact Prof Philip Baker in his foreward to the book comments “It is a beneficial consequence that Malta has an excellent academic in the form of Robert Attard who can turn the opportunity of the Diploma into a work of scholarship on the Maltese tax system…I ended my foreword to Robert Attard’s previous book on taxation by wishing the book and its author every success and anticipating that it would only be the first of several editions. I did not realise that, within just over three years, the author would be producing this excellent new book on the topic…” and “Readers will find in this book descriptions of many of the significant features of the modern Maltese tax system: for example, the tax treatment of cross border dividends, of trusts, and of collective investments institutions. “ Prof Philip Baker states also that “..
this book is designed to prepare students for the syllabus of the new Maltese paper for the Advanced Diploma in International Taxation (“ADIT”) promoted by the UK’s Chartered Institute of Taxation. When the idea of the ADIT was first mooted, I can say from personal recollection that it was never anticipated that the Diploma would act as a catalyst to the production of academic texts on international taxation and on the tax systems of countries around the world”.
“This book …. provided us with an unparalleled and extensive study of case-law.” said Ramona Piscopo, a local tax expert . She further states that such detailed works on Maltese tax law are sorely needed and it fills this lacuna in Maltese legal literature. This book is a must have for students and practitioners alike and members of the judiciary may well choose to refer to it when dealing with tax cases.
Lawrence Mizzi, President of the MIM , stated that this is another contribution of MIM to the continuous education of our professionals. MIM in accordance with its mission is continuously identifying areas in which there is a need for further training.
Reuben Buttigieg, Chairperson of the MIM Education Arm commented that the MIM Education arm has taken a strong proactive approach over the last two years. The development of various courses which are unique and new to Malta and the strong take up of such courses have showed that MIM through its continuous studies is at the forefront in identifying skills needed in the market. Not only, he continued , MIM acts on the studies it undertakes. This book is another confirmation of this, he said. We trust that students, practitioners, other management and business schools and institutes will benefit from this.
