Jawey Berdi, a migrant from Guinea was arraigned before the Magistrates’ Court on Monday morning on suspicions of being one of the leaders at yesterday’s riot at Safi detention centre.He was accused of causing more than €1,164 in damage to the detention centre, disobeying orders and forming part of a group intent on causing a crime. Despite denying his involvement by saying he was asleep at the time, he was remanded in custody.

Another migrant is expected to be arraigned tomorrow while a third is being treated at Mt Carmel Hospital.
