In the first quarter this year, sea transport between Malta and Gozo registered decreases in commuters and in vehicles, new NSO data shows.

In the first quarter of 2009, commuters between Malta and Gozo decreased by 11.1 per cent, totalling 711,265 when compared to the same period in 2008. Moreover, the number of vehicles carried by scheduled vessels went down by 5.3 per cent, totalling 220,018.

March was the month which saw the most commuters and vehicles – 267,090 and 78,333 respectively. It should be pointed out that in 2008, Easter fell in quarter 1.

The number of trips in the first quarter stood at 4,649, implying a decrease of 1.7 per cent over the comparable period the previous year. The highest number of trips was recorded in March – 1,585 or 34.1 per cent of the total number of trips for the period under review.
