In the men’s league, Valletta Mapei were crowned champions in a decisive match against Fleur de Lys Westen.

Fleur de Lys started off well by winning the first set. However a strong response by Valletta Mapei equalled the set scores and also gave them the advantage by two sets to one. Paul Vella, Robert Balzan and Ron Stivala wreaked havoc in the Fleur de Lys defence but Fleur de Lys, with excellent attacks from Paul Tonna managed to stay in the game. A number of unforced errors late in the fourth set from Fleur de Lys and good gameplay from Mapei gave the league championship to Valletta.

In the finals of the National Cup (Fr. Tony Parnis Cup), Hibs won the first two sets with Flyers putting up a late fight in the third set. However it was Hibs experience that made the difference by winning the third close set 25-21. In the second final that took place on Sunday afternoon between the same teams, Flyers were no match for a superior Hibs, with the game lost the previous day discouraging Carmel Gauci’s team. Hibs were always ahead during the three sets. One must mention an impressive run of services during the third set by Hibs’ Martha Curmi who managed to notch up 12 consecutive service points. Hibs won the second final 3-0 thus winning the National Cup for the sixth consecutive year.
