Maltaeurosong.com have reported in an interview held by Esctime.com with Maltese Eurovision hopeful Chiara that Moscow turned out to be quite different from what she expected as there is none of the bitter cold that people warned against and she almost felt like being back in Malta.

The road to Moscow has not been an easy one for her, though. A couple of months ago her father and biggest driving force sadly passed away. “You feel the emptiness there…”. Chiara decided to dedicate this competition to the memory of her father, who had the dream for her to be the first Maltese national to win Eurovision. She feels that her performance and song would have made him proud.

Her family will be joining her in Moscow for the competition next week. Unfortunately her baby daughter will be staying home this time. When asked what the song “What if we” meant to her, Chiara promptly replied that it was a song that she felt quite strongly about. It deals with issues people are having with jealousy and envy. This tends to take away friendships. She is at a place in her life where she is ready to address these issues and paint a picture of a world where these things do not exist.

Chiara confesses to being quite hard headed when esctime.com asked her what drove her to enter for a third time. She wants to win and believes that she will do so this time around. The experience that she has gleaned from her previous two entries in 1998 and 2005 definitely gives her an advantage, as one feels more secure and knows what to expect from the competition.

Motherhood has changed her life completely. Chiara mentions that she sees life differently and that she tends to think first for her daughter and then for herself. Her outlook and planning has also changed. Where she usually planned two years into the future, she now looks at ten years and the impact that her decisions will have on her and her family. Her way of singing has also changed. Since she became a mother, Chiara feels a lot more emotional and can feel that in her voice as well. This has made her voice even stronger than before.

Her future plans include singing full time, since this is a luxury that is not readily available for Maltese artists. She is already working on a new album.

When presented with an award from OGAE Rest of the World, Chiara was quite surprised and amazed that her music has had such an impact on the South African market, where her1998 entry was translated and covered by Nedine Blom and her 2005 entry was translated and covered by Tobi Jooste. “Engel” (“Angel”) by Tobi Jooste was a major hit for this young singer.
