Counting of votes for the Local Councils elections is to start on Saturday morning at the Naxxar counting hall. The Local Councils elections were held concurrently with the European Parliament elections in 23 different localities across Malta and Gozo last Saturday, June 6. Boxes with votes cast were sealed and kept at the Naxxar counting hall as the counting for the EP elections preceded. The final turnout for the Local Councils Election 2009 stood at 77%. In 2004, 82% of voters had cast their vote for local elections. However, the localities voting in 2004 were different.

Elections this year were held in Mdina, Bormla, Zabbar, Rabat (Gozo), Birkirkara, Fgura, Gudja, Gharb, Ghaxaq, Kalkara, Lija, Marsascala, Mgarr, Msida, Naxxar, Pieta’, Rabat (Malta), San Gwann, Sannat, Sliema, Tarxien, Xghajra and Mtarfa.

A total of 8,830 voting documents for the June 6 Local Councils elections had remained uncollected. There were 132,859 registered voters in those localities.

Final turnout for local council elections per locality as published by the Electoral Commission were as follows: Mdina – 85%, Bormla – 78%, Żabbar – 84%, Rabat (G) – 83%, Birkirkara – 79%, Fgura – 85%, Gudja – 93%, Għarb – 83%, Għaxaq – 88%, Kalkara – 86%, Lija – 88%, Marsaskala – 86%, Mġarr – 90%, Msida – 79%, Naxxar – 76%, Pieta’ – 80%, Rabat (M) – 83%, San Ġwann – 81%, Sannat (G) – 84%, Sliema – 73%, Tarxien – 82%, Xgħajra – 98%, Mtarfa – 91%.
