The fifth civic amenity in Gozo was opened on Saturday at Tal-Kus near Xewkija in Gozo by WasteServ Malta Ltd. The other four amenities are in Maghtab, Imriehel, Luqa and Hal Far in Malta.

The civic amenity will serve for the collection of separated bulky waste from homes and small quantities from entities.

Environment Minister Pulliccino said that illegal dumping is now expected to diminish once that the public has now been provided with another place where to get rid of domestic bulky waste while at the same time respect the environment.

WasteServ Chairperson, Perit Ben Farrugia said that since May 2009, more than 31,200 tonnes of bulky waste was collected in the civic amenity sites.

The site covers 2,400 metres squares and shall be the only civic amenity facility in Gozo. The project was co-financed by the European Union Structural Programme for Malta and was estimated at €4.6 million. The successful implementation led to additional funds which amounted to around €5.9 million. The Maltese Government co-financed 27% of the infrastructure amounting to €1.24 million. Government entities have provided the land and ensured the necessary development and the operations permits together with other access works.

The whole project ERDF 22 consisted of 300 bring-in sites, 5 civic amenity sites and an educational campaign to encourage waste separation. The project was extended to include another 200 bring-in sites in schools.
