Government urged to identify source of soot-like dust
Government was urged on Saturday to identify the source of black soot-like dust which has been lately causing a nuisance to various residents of Tarxien and surrounding localities.
Speaking at a press conference in Tarxien, Partit Laburista (PL) Environment spokesperson Leo Brincat said that immediate steps need to be taken to identify the cause of the pollution. He said that government should instantly install automated measuring systems at the Delimara and Marsa power stations.
The PL spokesperson also said that the party believes that Enemalta should regularly publish online monitoring records of dust emissions. Government should also call for an independent evaluation to establish whether the new Delimara power station plant is capable of keeping up with every type of emission.
Mayors of Tarxien, Paola, Fgura as well as the Vice Mayor of Marsa were also present at the press conference. They said that results had not yet been given with regards to samples they sent to MEPA months ago.
On Wednesday, Enemalta Corporation said that dust emissions from all the chimneys at Marsa Power station had remained substantially constant over the past six months and were well within the stipulated emissions limits. Enemalta was reacting to recent comments by the Tarxien local council. Read more.
