Malta, Italy urged to respect rules on illegal immigration
European Commission President Jose’ Manuel Barroso has called on Maltese and Italian authorities to respect international regulations with regards to illegal immigration in the Mediterranean.
Rainews reported that in a former letter to both governments sent through commissioner Jacques Barrot, President Barroso urged the Prime Ministers of Malta and Italy to respect human rights. He also asked for explanations.
Lately, relations between Malta and Italy over the search and rescue of illegal immigrants crossing from North Africa especially from Libya, were strained following an allegation by five illegal immigrants on a dinghy who said that 75 other illegal immigrants had died on the same dinghy and were thrown in the sea.
Following the incident, Italian media also demonised Malta on illegal immigration. Favourite News reports:
