Malta welcomes Swedish approval of Lisbon Treaty
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Tonio Borg has welcomed the Swedish Parliament’s approval of the Lisbon Treaty by a large majority. This brings the number of EU member state Parliaments that have ratified the new Treaty to 25.
The Government said that the Swedish vote is a very positive signal in the run-up to the European Council in December, during which a common way forward needs to be defined to enable the reform process to be completed, not least in light of the delicate international economic situation.
Continued progress along the path of integration is essential to enable Europe both to operate effectively and cohesively on the international stage, the Government stated.
The treaty has been unanimously approved by the Maltese Parliament.
