Malta international Jarrod Sammut has commenced his Super League tenure in the best possible fashion, scoring a try in the Celtic Crusaders’ 19-0 win against Bradford this afternoon.

At Murrayfield, Sammut was an interchange replacement scoring a second half try after Australian Michael Witt scored two converted tries, a penalty goal and field goal before him.

Sammut scored a superb try, taking a Weller Hauraki pass before chipping over the Bulls defence, re gathering and scoring to send the Crusaders to victory.

Crusaders coach Brian Noble said “he should be very pleased with himself and we’re pleased with him”

“He’s box-office. I think he’s exciting, I think he’s got a play in him, he’s going to be a fabulous asset for us. We’ve been waiting a long time” responded Noble to a journalist pointing out that Sammut was an unknown quantity to an extent.

“I’m pleased. The particular challenge for him was the volcano cloud kept him behind and then his plane broke down in Bangkok”

Sammut hopped off his long flight from Sydney almost 24 hours before the match in Edinburgh.

“Reality was his plane didn’t arrive till 10 o’clock yesterday morning” said Noble.

Crusaders supporters commented on the club’s Facebook group that Sammut’s try ‘has to be a contender for try of the year’.
