Malta Day-UK celebrates 10th anniversary
This year, Malta Day UK will be held on 11th September in Westminster, London as it celebrates its tenth anniversary. The first Malta Day UK was organised in the year 2000 at the initiative of former High Commissioner, the late Dr George Bonello Du Puis, who passed away earlier this year. This annual event has become the leading feature in the calendar of Maltese communities and individuals in the UK.
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Dr Tonio Borg and the Archbishop of Malta, H.G. Mons. Paul Cremona will be the guests of honour at this year’s Malta Day UK. The High Commissioner of Malta, Mr J. Zammit Tabona will officially open the day’s events at Westminster Cathedral Hall, where a fair will be held throughout the morning.
A large number of stalls selling Maltese food, beverages and artisan handicrafts will attract crowds from all over the UK. Various Maltese associations and companies will have stalls to exhibit their work, produce and services. During the fair, a band and choir will entertain by performing Maltese traditional tunes and songs.
The Archbishop of Malta will be the main concelebrant at Holy Mass at Westminster Cathedral in the afternoon. Archbishop Nichols of Westminster will be concelebrating ‘in choro’. ‘Voci Angeliche’ Choir of Xaghra Parish Gozo will perform psalms and hymns during this service. A procession with the statue of ‘il-Bambina’ will follow through the streets of Westminster. As the procession reaches the Sacred Heart Chapel of Ease on Westferry Road, there will be a concluding ceremony when the Maltese and UK national anthems will be played.
As in previous years, the day’s events will conclude with a Gala Dinner at The Hyatt Regency Hotel. For further information on the Fair, the Holy Mass and the Gala Dinner, contact can be made with the Malta High Commission on 0044 (0) 207 292 4800 or events.london@gov.mt
