Crew of sinking cargo ship rescued
The Armed Forces of Malta were involved in an operation to rescue the crew of a sinking ship on Monday afternoon.
The crew members of the Cambodian cargo ship the ‘Maystar’, which was sinking 26 miles off Delimara, were picked up by the merchant ship, ‘Sea Flower’, on Monday afternoon.
The 16- man crew abandoned the ship and took to a life raft after their ship started listing and taking in water. They however managed to issue a Mayday (SOS).
The AFM scrambled two Italian Military Mission AB 212 helicopter to render assistance.
In the meantime the merchant vessel Seaflower rescued the crew in the lifeboat. They were later transfered to the AFM vessel Melita 2 and brought safely ashore at the AFM maritime base at Haywharf.
The crew members are all believed to be in good condition. The police are carrying out their investigations on the incident.
