Burmarrad tradition revived - The time-honoured rural traditions of Burmarrad will be revived during the first edition of Festa Bdiewa f’Burmarrad. Traditionally, Burmarrad has always been connected with farming as most of its residents were engaged in the agricultural sector. They celebrated their livelihood by participating in a pilgrimage around Burmarrad, during which they used to display their animals, produce and tools and have them blessed on the church parvis. This year, St Paul’s Bay Local Council and the Burmarrad Feast Committee teamed up in order to revive this traditional feast in an activity called Festa Bdiewa f’Burmarrad. The historic pilgrimage and the blessing of animals and tools will be re-enacted. Furthermore there will be other traditional activities such as Maltese folk singing (għana), and a humorous theatre production (farsa). There will also be beer and wine competitions, tombola and typical Maltese food. There will also be an Agricultural Sports Day, a flower arrangement competition and a cake-baking competition. During this festival, which will be held over three days, visitors will also have the chance to explore the cultural heritage of this village which is trying to revive its rural roots. The activity is organised by the St. Paul’s Bay Local Council in conjunction with the Burmarrad Parish Feast Committee.

Into the Ark and Down the Chimney - A double-bill consisting of “The Little Sweep” and “Noye’s Fludd” presented by Theatre Troupe two operas for all the family. “The Little Sweep” is an opera based on a short story by Charles Dickens, in which children, aided by a very sympathetic nursery maid, free a nine-year-old apprentice chimney sweep from his cruel master and dangerous trade. Musically, “The Little Sweep” finely demonstrates Britten’s skill in writing accessible, non-patronising music for children and amateurs which is pleasant and entertaining for the traditional opera lovers as well as adults. “Noye’s Fludde” (Noah’s Flood) is an early 15th century mystery play from the Chester Mystery Cycle set to music by Benjamin Britten. The story is well-known among children and this production includes a narrator, 2 adult singers, 12 adolescents and a chorus of children playing the parts of animals. Venue: Teatru Manoel, Valletta.
