Aircraft emergency exercise held at MIA
A full scale Aircraft Emergency Exercise was held by
Malta International Airport on Apron 5 on Thursday morning. The Exercise was divided into two separate scenarios:
1st Scenario - Call Sign SAR 1101 – Air Speed – MUC / MLA*
Participation by Air Malta & Lufthansa as Code-Share airlines
Details: On impact, passenger aircraft carrying 26 persons, suffered
extensive damage leaving one (1) passenger dead and 11 injured,
some trapped and others trying to escape from the aircraft. Fuselage
was filled with smoke and visibility inside was reduced to minimal.
2nd Scenario - Call Sign AC 2010 – Air Orange Cargo*
Participation by Emirates
Details: Cargo aircraft carrying hazardous material suffered extensive
damage, and consequently broke in two. It was engulfed in flames
killing all three (3) crew members inside the aircraft.
Various entities and organisations participated in the Exercise which
were coordinated by the Incident Commander from the MIA’s Fire &
Rescue Services.
MIA would like to thank Air Malta, the Armed Forces of Malta, the Civil Aviation Directorate (Transport Malta), the Civil Protection Department, the Department of Information, the Health Emergency Services (Mater Dei Hospital), Emirates, Lufthansa, Malta Air Traffic Services, Malta Police, Servisair GlobeGround Malta, St John Rescue Corps and Malta Red Cross, for their involvement and collaboration for the Exercise to be held.
The organisation of these Exercises is aimed at assessing the level of
preparedness of all entities involved, and reflects MIA’s commitment
to safety and security in all its operations.
