Provisional data published by the National Statistics Office (NSO) on Tuesday show that industrial production went down by 0.8 per cent in May over the corresponding month last year.

In May 2011, industrial production decreased by 0.8 per cent from 102.4 points in May 2010. During this period, the decline of 3.5 per cent in the production of consumer goods was partly mitigated by increases of 0.4, 3.9 and 1.4 per cent in the production of intermediate goods, energy and capital goods respectively.

NSO said that at the NACE division level, the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (NACE 26), manufacture of food products (NACE 10), manufacture of wearing apparel (NACE 14) and manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and preparations (NACE 21) decreased by 0.8, 5.1, 13.3 and 10.8 per cent respectively. On the other hand, electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (NACE 35), other manufacturing (NACE 32), manufacture of rubber and plastic products (NACE 22) and manufacture of textiles (NACE 13) increased by 3.7, 13.6, 7.5 and 13.3 per cent respectively.

These NACE divisions partly offset the decline in the overall index.
