As part of the 2011 edition of the Evenings on Campus, the Malta Classics Association together with Troupe 18:45 and Kristabell Catania will bring back to life the classical dialogue by Plato in an original adaptation by Karmenu Serracino- Is-Simpozju.

Is-Simpożju directed by Roderick Vassallo, is a Maltese play written by Karmenu Serracino. Its plot is simple yet full of surprises, although it refers to the original characters of the Symposium, written by Plato, this production can be easily understood by the public who is unfamiliar with such works.

Agathon, an Athenian tragedian, has just won first prize in the ancient dramatic festival of Dionysia in 41 B.C. In order to celebrate, he throws a party for some of the most brilliant men of Athens, including the philosopher Socrates and the comic playwright Aristophanes. As the wine flows, talk turns to love, with the guests discussing all forms of love, including erotic, homosexual and eventually philosophical.

As the discussion becomes increasingly animated, the adaptation takes on a life of its own until it culminates in a conclusion that is as moving as it is unexpected.

Cast members include Michael Tabone, Kris Spiteri, Shirley Blake, Tyrone Grima, Keith Borg, Kurt Pawley and with the participation of Martian Theatre.

The production will be held on the 30th and 31st July at 21:00hrs CEST at the Earth System Courtyard, Car Park 6, at the University of Malta.

It is sponsored by the University of Malta, Evenings on Campus, Corinthia Group of Companies & Malta Council for Culture and the Arts.
