Services turnover and employment on the decline
In the fourth quarter last year, turnover and employment in selected services activities recorded a decrease of 2.3 per cent and 0.2 per cent respectively, when compared to 2010, the NSO revealed on Thursday.
During this period, wholesale trade decreased by 7.3 per cent. Furthermore, decreases were registered in accommodation and food services activities (-7.2 per cent), and in information and communication (-5.1 per cent). Retail trade and transportation and storage rose by 4.3 and 3.9 per cent respectively.
The fourth quarter of 2011 showed that employment in selected services edged down by 0.2 per cent to 96.3 points. These declines were recorded in retail trade (-0.4 per cent), transportation and storage (-6.6 per cent) and in administrative and support services activities (-3.1 per cent). On the other hand, increases in employment were registered in accommodation and food services activities and wholesale trade, of 2.4 and 0.6 per cent respectively.
Hours worked in the services sector rose by 1.2 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2011 when compared to the corresponding quarter of 2010.
