A group of 87 migrants have been rescued by an Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) patrol vessel after their craft was located adrift in a position 65 nautical miles (NM) south of Malta.

In response to this case, the AFM’s Rescue and Coordination Centre (RCC-Malta) at Luqa Barracks initially deployed an AFM Air Wing King Air maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) to locate the migrants’ craft. At 1100hrs ,the aircraft successfully located the migrants’ dinghy following an extended search. The Protector-class patrol vessel P-51 was dispatched to the area to render assistance as required.

After it was verified that the craft was disabled and that the persons aboard required rescue, the migrants were embarked aboard the P51. The group is made up of 25 women, of which 3 appear to be pregnant, and 62 men.
