The song What If We sung by Chiara will represent Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest in Russia next May. It was proclaimed winner of the 2009 Malta Euro Song on Saturday night.

Chiara garnered the highest number of preferences through televoting after it had made it to the super-final of 3 songs chosen by a panel of 5 expert judges. The previous stages leading to the final 20 included a selection of 56 entries made by judges and 15 entries chosen by televoting through the Euro Showbox on TVM.

The three songs in the super-final received the following public votes:

12,249 votes: Chaira - What If We (Marc Paelinck/Gregory Bilsen) [winner]
9,785 votes: Eleanor Cassar - Someday (Paul Giordimaina/Fleur Balzan) [runner-up]
tba : Q - Before You Walk Away (Paul Giordimaina/Fleur Balzan)

Televoting and SMS lines were opened by presenters Valerie Vella and Pablo Micallef at approximately 2340 CET and remained active for 20 minutes, giving ample time for viewers to vote comfortably. The final result was announced about an hour after the end of the televoting session.

Entertainers during the show from the Malta Convention Centre in Ta’ Qali, which was broadcast live on TVM, included Toby & Kristina Casolani, Airport Impressions, Niki Gravino, The Rifffs, 2009 Eurovision singers Jade (UK) and Hadise (Turkey) , and Malta’s 2008 Eurovision girl Morena.
